Mainstage Theatre Renovations
UPDATE 11/4/2012: Project Completed! We are happily moved into the new control booth, and have already begun to experience the many benefits of a flush turntable lip.
It is hard to walk into the LC Mainstage Theatre without noticing some significant changes. We currently have two construction projects in process right now.
The first, more minor project, is replacing the lip of the turntable. Previously, the turntable was edged with a raised, steel lip above the stage floor. Not only did this make it difficult for leveling stage sets and the movement of the orchestra shell towers, but the lip presented safety issues prohibiting the use of the stage for activities such as dance. The new lip will be wooden and flush with the stage level.
The second, major project, is the movement/renovation of the control booth. Since the LC was built, the main control booth for the theatre has been on the first floor, underneath the balcony. In addition to the inconvenience of proximity to equipment for troubleshooting (the majority of equipment is located on the 3rd floor level of the LC), the position of the booth was a distraction for audience members sitting in that area. The booth in this location has since been removed, and that space will be occupied by 14 additional seats. The control room in the 3rd floor (above the balcony) is under renovation to house the new control booth. The room will have an enclosed section housing the noisy equipment (amp racks, follow spots, video control equipment), as well as an open-air area from which the main lighting, sound and projection control systems will be operated.
The process for both construction projects are being photo-documented and will be posted below for interested persons. Enjoy!
